Tuesday (8/6)

Earnings spotlight: Caterpillar

Caterpillar (CAT) is one of a few Dow Jones stocks on the earnings calendar, with the construction equipment giant slated to disclose its second-quarter results ahead of Tuesday's open.

Analysts, on average, expect CAT to report earnings of $5.54 per share, or a penny lower than what it reported in the year-ago period. Revenue is forecast to arrive at $16.7 billion, down 3.7% year-over-year (YoY).

Jefferies analyst Stephen Volkmann (Buy) thinks investors will be focused on Caterpillar's inventory progression in this print "given soft end-market conditions."

The company tends to build inventory in Q1 and sell it back down throughout the rest of the year. "Historically, dealer inventories fall about $150 million to $200 million sequentially in Q2, so investors will be watching this to see whether inventories are building," Volkmann adds.

Wednesday (8/7)

Earnings spotlight: Walt Disney

Walt Disney (DIS) shares have been trending lower on the price charts since the media and entertainment giant won its proxy fight against Nelson Peltz in early April. Indeed, DIS is down nearly 25%.

Can a well-received earnings report give the blue chip stock a desperately needed boost?

Wall Street will find out when the company unveils its fiscal third-quarter results ahead of Wednesday's open. Industry analysts expect Disney to report earnings of $1.19 per share (+15.5% YoY) on revenue of $23.0 billion (+3.1% YoY).

Ahead of the company's turn on the earnings calendar, CFRA Research analyst Kenneth Leon cut his price target on DIS by $16 to $100, while maintaining a Hold recommendation.

"We no longer have a high-risk premium for DIS to peers given the challenges in linear and streaming businesses," Leon wrote in a July 23 note. "We think investor attention will be on Disney+ and what progress management has made in driving technology, focusing on arresting customer churn, and delighting the user experience."

Earnings spotlight: Robinhood Markets

Wall Street should expect "another stellar quarter" from Robinhood Markets (HOOD) when the online trading platform discloses its second-quarter results after Wednesday's close, says Mizuho Securities analyst Dan Dolev (Outperform, the equivalent of Buy).

This outlook is shared by BofA Securities analyst Craig Siegenthaler (Buy), who anticipates a strong quarter from the broker. "Rising retail investor engagement is benefiting account growth, trading activity and margin loan usage at Robinhood," which will likely drive a bottom-line beat, the analyst says. "Additionally, HOOD has built a base of younger investors that will accumulate significant wealth over the next 10 years."

Analysts, on average, expect Robinhood to report earnings up 15 cents per share, a marked improvement over the 2 cents per share it earned in the year-ago period. Revenue is forecast to land at $634.2 million (+30.5% YoY).
