In 1897, Mark Twain is said to have read his own obituary, and then remarked, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” And Mark Twain isn’t the only one to have this sorry experience, as Wikipedia’s List of premature obituaries makes clear.
The Identifier Services Team knows just how they feel. It is true that we announced some changes to EZID that would limit our DOI services to users within the University of California system, but we also said “EZID (continues to) support ARK identifiers.” And, we said “CDL is committed to maintaining a global scope of business for ARKs as an open, library-based identifier infrastructure, consistent with University of California open access initiatives.” Even so, there are rumors flying around that EZID is dead.
EZID is alive and kicking!
- Continues to add functionality to EZID for 8.7 million ARK and DOI identifiers
- Resolves over 600 identifier types via N2T.net
- Collaborates with research communications organizations both locally and internationally, producing ground-breaking work
- Is embarking on a staged effort to open-source the infrastructure behind EZID and N2T
